Has the player played the last three matches?
"Has played" is the single biggest indicator. A player rotated for two games usually comes back rusty on a fourth.
Head-to-head against tonight's opposition
Most platforms expose head-to-head. A player with a 60+ average against the next opposition is worth more than overall season numbers.
Venue split, not just overall stats
Test the player's record at the specific ground. Some venues suit spin, some suit pace, and a player's splits usually tell you which side of that coin to bet on.
Role ceiling, not role floor
Look at the player's ceiling — their best score in the last ten matches — not just the floor. Captain picks live or die on ceiling.
